Confessions of a Blind Guy | Would I Ever Get A Guide Dog?

On Wednesday night, I watched a documentary on ITV, I don’t know if you’ll have seen it, but it was all about Guide Dogs and their training. It got me thinking.

If I Thought I Eventually Needed To, Would I Get A Guide Dog?

My answer is most definitely yes. As you all know, I already have my White Cane. I know without any doubt that at some point in the future, my eye sight is going to become worse.

I sat and thought after watching this incredibly moving Documentary. Would I get one, and I have to be honest, I would, mainly because I can’t rely on my White Cane or family for the rest of my life. I know that some people would think to themselves, my Sight won’t ever get worse, but my mind set is not like that. Having RP, I have taught myself to plan for the future, and always to factor in that at some point, I may go totally Blind. If that does happen, or if my Sight gets so worse that my White Cane is no longer useful to me. Then of course I would consider the Guide Dog route. It would be stupid of me not to consider this. Of course I hope I don’t have to, but if I needed to, the answer would be YES!

Hello Luke, I have been working with a guide dog for just two years now. He is a black Labrador Retriever named Leif.

I worked with a cane for about four years before meeting Leif and I would now not go back to using a white cane for everyday use.

Canes are great tools but I find they get me into as much trouble as they get me out of. Having a dog as a guide is so much easier.

Dogs actually avoid obstacles, they lead you through moving crowds more easily and they are great to just sit and talk too. Imagine some weird blind guy sitting talking to his cane! LOL

I think too with a guide dog the blind are actually more visible to sighted persons, I must get dozens of comments about Leif being handsome or well behaved each time we go out. When was the last time anyone came up and said “Oh! What a handsome white cane.” My wife is no longer astonished to leave me in Starbucks only return a few minutes later and find me in conversation with someone, often female, admiring Leif.

So Luke. Guide Dogs are life changers and I love my guide dog.

    All the best.
