Five Things That Make Me Not Want To Read Your Blog

I love to read a good blog, but when I do, a few things make me not want to, and I thought I would tell you five of them.

1. No Accessibility.

I usually use my iPhone to read blogs, and I use VoiceOver to do so. For anyone who doesn’t know, VoiceOver is a screen reader program, and if VoiceOver doesn’t work with your blog, or has trouble navigating all your posts, i’m not going to continue reading.

2. Pop-ups.

I absolutely hate pop-ups, When I read your blog, I don’t want to be bombarded by pop-ups to follow your social media, subscribe to your mailing list, or to do anything else. I just want to read your posts.

3. Nothing But Pictures.

I like a good outfit of the day or wish list post as good as the next reader, but being visually impaired, I loath posts that contain nothing but pictures. I mean it wouldn’t kill you to just add a little text saying what the picture is.

4. No Alt Text In Pictures.

For anyone who doesn’t know, the Alt Text is a little bit of code embedded within a picture that says what the picture contains. For example, a person sat in front of a wooden table, with a glass in their hand. The only trouble with Alt Text is that of course, these descriptions have to be added by the person who uploads the picture. It also means that anyone who is visually impaired, and uses a screen reader, so me, can tell what the picture is. It absolutely irritates me when the person who has uploaded the picture can’t be bothered to add the Alt Text, and doesn’t realise how much of a big deal it is.

5. No About Me Page.

The first thing I do when I start reading a new blog is check the about me page. I do this mainly to find out a little about the blog I am reading, but quite often than not there isn’t one. How am I supposed to gain a connection that will make me come back and read time and time again, if you don’t tell me about yourself?

There’s loads more things that make me not want to read your blog, but I thought I would just tell you five of them.

  1. Thank you for the info.
I do not know how to do alternate text in my blog. I do, however, add a description, usually at the end.
Making things accessible is both common sense and common courtesy.

  2. This is really interesting. I think I am not guilty of any of the things that irritate you, but I do use a lot of photos on my blog. I never knew what alt.text was before and now I’ve read this (I did actually read it when you first posted) I have been putting alt text on all my photos and pictures.

  3. Oh I think I am guilty of number 4. I never knew how important it was. I will do my best to correct that mistake.

  4. I see the option for alt text on my blog, but I didn’t know what it is or how to use it. Thanks for the info.
