Hi all my wonderful readers. How are you all doing today?
Last Monday, I was very kindly invited to attend a Burrito Masterclass held by the fabulous people over at Barburritto, and I thought I would share with you what happened.
As always, I went with Jamie. Jamie also brought one of his good friends with him, Abby. Abby is the one who took all of the fantastic pictures featured in this post.
Upon entering the incredibly modern and chic Leeds Barburrito Restaurant, we were all greeted by an extremely friendly woman called Stephanie. Stephanie is the PR Co-ordinator for the whole Barburritto brand. After saying hello, she guided us to a lovely modern table and asked if we would like a drink. As I don’t drink, I opted for a Pepsi.
After we got our drinks, we sat down and ate a few of the to die for tortilla chips.
After about ten or so minutes of stuffing our faces with tortilla chips, and looking around the room. Stephanie brought the whole room to a standstill and started explaining what was going to happen.
She explained that soon she would be passing around little pots of all their different ingredients. She also told us to try and work out what we could taste as it would work in our favour later. She also said that she would be teaching us all how to wrap the perfect burrito, and last but by no means least, she also said we would be making our own custom burrito.
After Stephanie had finished explaining, she started passing around all of the different ingredients that Barburrito use in their burritos.
She started with their Guacamole. To me, it tasted very grassy. Yes, I know it contains Avacados, but it still tasted grassy. I loved it, but it’s not something I could have loads of.
The next thing I tried was some of their salsa. Even though i’m not a lover of spice i gave it a try. It turns out it was their Mule Driver. I thought it was a good idea to eat an entire spoonful of the stuff. Whatever you do, don’t do this. It’s a lovely salsa but jesus it was hot.
Next up was the rice. There was two different kinds. The first was the lime and coriander. It was very earthy. That’s the only way I can describe it. It was lovely, but it had too much coriander for my liking. The second rice was a very tasty plain brown rice. I actually preferred this one to the lime and coriander one.
The next things I tried was all their fantastic vegetables. There was three different types. Garlic Mushrooms, Peppers, and Onions. As I have an aversion to mushrooms, I didn’t try those. I did however try both the peppers and onions. The peppers were your basic peppers. The onions however were very smoky. You could tell that they had been perfectly cooked on a hot smoky grill.
The next thing I tried was the two kinds of beans. The first one was the Pinto Beans. The Pinto beans were the ones most like your traditional baked beans. They were wonderful. If you’re looking for a nice flavourful bean to go with your buritto this one is for you. The next beans were the Black Beans. These had a mild spicy kick to them. It wasn’t too much that you needed a drink after one taste, but enough that you still noticed it.
The last things I tried was all the kinds of main fillings. There was five different kinds to choose from. There was Chargrilled Chicken, Slow Cooked Pulled Pork, Flash Fried Vegetables, Spicy Shredded Steak, and Spicy Beef.
All of them were to die for. The chicken was extremely moist but still well cooked. The Slow Cooked Pulled Pork was lovely
. It was extremely barbequey. You could tell it had been cooked in some kind of sauce. The steak was extremely tender. It had a bit of a spicy kick to it. I couldn’t tell what it was but it was gorgeous. Unfortunately I didn’t manage to try the Spicy Beef or the Flash Fried Vegitables, but I will most definitely be returning to try them at some point.
After we had tried all of their amazing ingredients, Stephanie started explaining the background of the Barburrito brand. She told us that Barburrito was started by two guys called Morgan and Paul who were sick of their day to day nine to five, and wanted to inject a bit more creativity into their lifes. They discovered they both shared a love of Mexican food and there you go Barburrito was born. In 2005 they launched their first restaurant in Manchester, from then on the business has gone from strength to strength and has grown into the sensation you see today.
After Stephanie had told us all about the background of the amazing brand. We moved onto the main event, teaching us how to wrap the perfect burrito.
Stephanie handed us all a little instruction card which Jamie read out to me. It seemed simple enough, but just because something seems simple doesn’t mean it’s that easy.
It started off well enough, but things quickly went down hill. We were given a freshly made tortilla wrap filled with rice to practice with. We used rice because it was the less messy of their ingrediants to work with, plus it meant we didn’t waste any of the other ingredients. I got the first few steps ok, but then i got really confused. Jamie was even confused, so if Jamie couldn’t do it, I had no chance. Stephanie walked over and asked how it was going and she soon realised I was struggling. She tried to give me a bit of help but it was soon decided that Stephanie would wrap my buritto once I had filled it up with all their lovely goodness.
After we all tried, and I failed at trying to fold our burritos, it was time to make our own.
After Stephanie lead me up to the counter area, I was asked to wash my hands and put on some rubber gloves.
Stephanie put my torilla wrap on the foil and lead me to all the different stations.
Here’s what I put in mine.
Brown Rice.
Pinto Beans.
Onions.
Flame grilled Chicken.
Mild Salsa. Guacamole.
After I had put all my fillings in my burrito. Stephanie very kindly wrapped my wrap up and wrapped it up in some foil and guided me back to my table.
I waited a little while for Jamie to make his own buritto, and when he returned I started eating.
Mine was to die for. I have only ever had one other burrito in my life. I wasn’t a massive fan. I mean it was nice, but it was nothing to write home about. But after having a burrito from Barburrito, I am hooked, and I will most definitely be returning.
While I was eating my burrito. Stephanie approached and asked if I would like to try some of their new salsa.
I had already burnt my mouth out with their Mule Driver salsa, so I might as well as completely destroy my tastebuds. This one was their Extreme Salsa and it’s that hot that if you ask for it on your burrito the staff have to ask you twice if you’re sure you actually want it on your buritto.
I thought that the Mule Driver was hot, but the Extreme was intense. The Mule Driver almost blew my mouth out, but this one almost paralysed me. It’s ok when you first taste it, but it gets hotter and hotter as you leave it. Drinking even makes it hotter. Unless you love spice, stay the hell away from this because it will set your mouth on fire.
I loved my night at Barburrito and if you haven’t already checked out Barburritos amazing food, you really need to as soon as possible.
Barburrito are actually running two amazing Twitter competitions. The first is called The Salsa Selfie. The winner can win some awesome prizes. All you have to do is order some of their Extreme Salsa and take a selfie of the expression on your face. The second Twitter competition is their Extreme Challenge. All you have to do is take a picture of you doing something extreme while eating one of their burittos, and you could win a years worth of burritos.
I would just like to say a huge massive thank you to all the staff at Barburrito and Stephanie for an incredible night and a wonderful experience. I will definitely be popping back into Barburrito for another incredible burrito very very soon.
Have you tried Barburrito? What did you think? Please let me know your thoughts in the comments down below.
