Until the invention of AI and things like Apple Live Recognition, Be My Eyes, and Microsoft Seeing AI, one of my main frustrations about being Blind definitely had to be that I would constantly be asking people around me what i’m looking at. That’s why when I heard that Ray-Ban Meta had released a pair of Headliner Glasses with Denim Frames and Red Lenses that claim to use AI to describe the World around you as well as take Pictures and Videos, listen to Music, and translate conversations, I obviously had to pop down to my local Sunglass Hut and pick them up. Well i’ve been wearing them for a little while now, and I thought that I would tell you what I thought of them.

Here’s what Ray-Ban Meta say about their Headliner Glasses with Denim Frames and Red Lenses.

Their material.

I really liked their material, as even though they were made out of Polycarbonate Plastic, I thought that they felt very substantial when I was holding them and getting them out of their Case, and that they felt incredibly lightweight when I was wearing them as I totally forgot that I was wearing them.

Their size.

It did take me a little while to get used to their size, as even though they’re the traditional Headliner shape that everyone knows and loves, I usually wear Glasses with a much more rectangular shape, and the added extra bit of Lens kind of got on my nerves after a couple of hours of wearing them.

Their design.

I absolutely loved their design, as I thought that they had a really funky but still classic design that worked beautifully with whatever I was wearing. I also really liked that both the Denim Frames and Red Lenses were slightly transparent as it meant that you noticed their bold and interesting colours without them being too overstated. Another thing that I really liked was that all the controls, including the Camera Button, the Touch Panel, and the Camera blended seamlessly into the Plastic, and that unless you were looking or feeling specifically for them that you didn’t really notice that they were there.

Their set up.

I really liked how easy they were to set up, as once I had downloaded the Meta AI App on to my Phone, had created a Meta AI Account, had taken the Glasses out of their Case, had removed the little security label on the inside of the Case to activate the Glasses, and had followed the onscreen instructions to pair them to my Phone, the Internet and all of the other services that it could connect to ,including my Messages and Phone App, Facebook, Instagram, Spotify and WhatsApp, they were ready to use. I also really liked that during the set up process that it took me through a little tutorial on how to use the Glasses, including how to take both a Picture and a Video using my Voice, and giving me little hints on what I could ask it to do including how I could ask it what I was looking at.

What they did when I used them.

I really liked what these did when I used them, as once I said Hey Meta, they instantly responded with a little twinkling noise, and then once I had asked it to do something like take a Picture or Video, it instantly responded and didn’t lag or stall like I thought it would. I also really liked that when I said Hey Meta, what am I looking at?, That it twinkled and told me what was right in front of me. Now yes I did have to ask it several times to gain the information that I was specifically looking for as it basically just takes a Picture and uses AI to describe it to you like most other Optical Character Recognition, OCR, Tools do, but I did eventually get the information that I was looking for. Another thing that I really liked was it’s Camera Function, as if you follow me on Social Media, you’ll know that I love taking Pictures of what i’m doing but usually have to get someone else to take it for me if I want it to be in focus. But because the Camera is attached to the Left Temple of my Glasses, I could just point and shoot and know that as long as I stayed still that it would be in focus. It also told me if the Picture was blurry with it’s Media Quality Check function, uploaded things directly to both Facebook and Instagram, and also automatically uploaded them to my Phones Camera Library when the Glasses were charging. The only thing that I didn’t like about them was that whenever I uploaded something to Facebook and Instagram, that it automatically watermarked them as being made with Ray-Ban Meta, which despite having a setting in the Meta AI App to disable, still labelled everything whenever I disabled it.

It’s battery life.

I wasn’t really a massive fan of it’s battery life, as one charge lasted for just under four hours, and even though I could put them back in their Case to charge and get up to another thirty-six hours of use out of them, it meant that I had to carry their Case around with me. I usually just carry my Cane, Phone, Wallet and Headphones with me, so carrying a very bulky Glasses Case with me became a little bit cumbersome unless I took some kind of a Bag with me.

Their packaging.

I really liked their packaging, as the Glasses themselves came inside a very substantial Hard Plastic Case with a Magnetic Clasp which meant that they were kept really safe until they arrived. The Glasses Case itself came in a very thick Cardboard Box that I thought looked really professional and would be perfect to give to someone as a Gift.

My overall thoughts.

Overall I would have to rate the Ray-Ban Meta Headliner Glasses with Denim Frames and Red Lenses a nine out of ten. I absolutely loved their substantial but lightweight material, their size, their design, their set up, what they did when I used them, and their packaging, but I just wish that the Meta AI Function had been a little bit more accurate when I was asking it what I was looking at, that it didn’t plaster made with Ray-Ban Meta all over my Photos and Videos whenever I uploaded them to Facebook and Instagram, and that it’s battery lasted for a little bit longer.
