With me being Visually Impaired, I do quite a lot of strange things that I truly believe I wouldn’t do if I was fully sighted, and after having quite a few of them pointed out to me lately, I thought that I would tell you the five strange things that I do because i’m Visually Impaired.
Anyway, that’s enough of me rambling, here’s five strange things I do because i’m Visually Impaired.

A picture of me holding my Cane.
1. I sniff everything.
From Flowers, to Food and Drink, and even when I enter a Room, i’m constantly sniffing everything as it allows me to get a feel for what’s around me and helps me to orientate myself if I get lost. For example, if i’m walking around a Shop and know that something that smells strongly of Lemon is right next to the entrance, I know that when I smell Lemon again that i’m near the Door. I also have a very strange talent for remembering smells and being able to distinctly tell each individual scent of a product, which comes in extremely handy when it comes to reviewing things like Bath Bombs, Shower Gels, and Soap.
2.I eat Toothpaste.
Ok, so this isn’t as weird as it sounds as i’m pretty sure that it’s something that most Blind and Visually Impaired people do, but it does sound weird when I explain it to anyone that’s fully sighted. To stop me from getting Toothpaste all over the Bathroom, Instead of me squeezing the Toothpaste on to my Toothbrush, I just squeeze a little bit into my Mouth, find it with the Head of my Toothbrush, and start brushing.
3. I get addicted to certain Textures.
I don’t know if this is technically because i’m Visually Impaired, but when I find something that I like the feel of, whether that’s a Beauty Product, a piece of Clothing, or the pattern of a Glass Jar, I end up buying multiple versions of it again and again as I love the way that it feels.
4. I eat everything with my Hands.
I know that this one sounds pretty gross, but I try to eat as much as I can with my Hands as it allows me to control exactly where everything is going so that I don’t end up spilling things down myself, well that’s the idea anyway. I do also do this when i’m out and about, but I usually try to order things that you would generally expect to be eaten with your Hands, like Burgers, Pizza, and Sandwiches so that it doesn’t look as weird to anyone walking past. ,
5. I inadvertently listen to other people’s conversations.
Half of the time I don’t even realise that i’m doing it, but if i’m walking around, in a Shop, or just sat having a Drink and someone is talking at a volume that isn’t a whisper, I usually end up listening into their conversation. But I guess it’s only like someone who’s fully sighted sitting in a Coffee Shop and people watching, right?
There you go, that’s the five strange things that I do because i’m Visually Impaired.
What’s some of the strange things that you do because you’re Visually Impaired? Do you eat your Toothpaste too? What’s some of the best things you’ve accidentally overheard? Please let me know down below.

I totally get you on the textures thing. I love soft things. My husband brushes his teeth the same way. He has RP and is completely blind due to it and I have low vision due to Nystagmus. Blindness and being visually impaired doesn’t stop us from living a full live.
