Five Things That Keep Me Awake At Night

As you may or may not know, I have quite a difficult time sleeping, so I thought I would tell you five of the things that keep me awake at night.

  1. People.

What I mean by this, is people snoring. I have excellent hearing, and with there being four other people that live in my house, which all snore, it’s extremely difficult to find the peace and quiet I need to drift of to the land of nod.

2. Animals.

As well as my dog Riley pacing around the house because someone has forgotten to make sure he has been locked in one of the rooms, there’s also a massive Bird that lives outside my window, that at exactly 5:30am likes to exercise it’s extremely loud voice. This means that after spending hours trying to get to sleep, i’m now awake again.

3. Weather.

I live in the United Kingdom, which as we all know doesn’t have the best weather, especially in the colder months. Rain, Snow, and Wind, usually crash against my window late at night, and all the noise can either keep me awake, or can raise me from the slumber i’ve finally managed to get into.

4. Temperature.

I’m extremely particular when it comes to my temperature, especially when i’m trying to get to sleep. When I eventually get to sleep, I like to be not overly warm, but not too cold. The perfect temperature when i’m trying to get to sleep would have to be freezing, as I can always get warm, but I find it incredibly hard to get cold once i’m hot.

5. Comfort.

This has to be the most important thing to me when i’m trying to sleep. If i’m not comfy, I end up tossing and turning the entire night, which of course, makes for one irritated, moody, bitchy, Luke, haha!

These are just five of the things that keep me awake at night, but of course there’s loads more.

What keeps you awake at night? What do you do to finally get to sleep? Please let me know down below.

  1. Hello Luke,

one of the main things that decides if I will sleep well, like you is temperature.

I love a cold bedroom and hate hot nights. My problem therefore is that I live in California, right in the centre of California, where summers are hot and winter’s are not particularly cold either.

Nightime temperatures here might get to around 20 degrees Celsius in the summer and about seven degrees Celsius in the winter. For me that is still a little too warm.

Add to that, that my wife cannot sleep without at least three fans running in the bedroom all night, it often feels that it would be easier sleeping beside the main runway of Manchester Airport.

Most mornings I am up and about by 4am listening to the news on the BBC over internet radio as I write a blog or work on planning items for my TV program ‘Blindside Fresno.’

I do really miss cold, frosty British Winter nights, and the ability to get down under piles of blankets comfortably warming my bed as my breath fogged up my bedroom windows.

    All the best

    William Elliott
