I was recently very kindly tagged by Nanjiba to do the Do All Blind People Think The Same? Tag, which I can’t believe I haven’t already done, and I thought that I would answer all of it’s very interesting questions for you.
Anyway, that’s enough of me rambling, here’s my answers to the Do All Blind People Think The Same? Tag.

A picture of me holding my Red Cane.
1. Has being Blind enhanced your senses?
I do think that there’s a massive misconception that just because your Blind or Visually Impaired that the rest of your senses must be somehow heightened, but they unfortunately aren’t and we just tune into our other senses more. I have however noticed that as my remaining Vision is getting worse, that I tend to notice other things a lot more easily, like quiet sounds from downstairs when i’m watching TV upstairs and being able to pick out most of the individual scents of a product’s fragrance.
2. Do Blind people prefer to date other Blind people?
I wouldn’t really know as I haven’t had that much experience with dating, both Visually Impaired and Fully Sighted, but I can definitely see the appeal of dating someone who is Blind or Visually Impaired as it would mean that we have a lot more in common, such as knowing the struggles and frustrations of living with a Visual Impairment.
3. Are Blind people less shallow about their romantic partners?
Yes and no. I definitely think that I tend to be drawn to people who have an amazing personality rather than what they look like, but I have noticed that the slightest change in someones personality can make me go off of them rather quickly.,
4. Does unsolicited help make things harder?
Yes, especially when i’m already concentrating very hard on what i’m doing like trying to cross a Road, why is it always when i’m trying to cross a Road? I get why people think they’re helping as if I saw someone struggling to cross the Road my natural instinct would be to go and help them too, but I really wish that people would just ask, as nine times out of ten i’m not struggling, i’m just trying to concentrate on trying to get from one side of the Road to the other in a straight line, something that i’ve never been that great at doing.
5. Is the City you live in easily accessible for you?
Like most Cities in the UK it is in some parts and not in others. For instance, Bradford is absolutely loaded with Tactile Paving, but if I want to go from my House to the Interchange, once I arrive into Bradford on the Bus, I then have to cross an incredibly busy Dual Carriageway with very temperamental Crossing Boxes, then walk up a hill with uneven Paving before crossing a very busy Parking Entrance that even though has Tactile Paving, doesn’t have any kind of Pelican Crossing or Pedestrian right of way. This means that I have to either just chance it and hope that it’s clear before I cross or ask a stranger for help.
6. Are you offended when Blind is used as one of your descriptive characteristics?
No, not really. Being Blind is a part of me, just like me having Blue Eyes or Brown Hair. Yes it does get a little bit annoying when random strangers refer to me as the Blind one or the Blind guy, but I know that they’re only doing it because they don’t know my name and want to get my attention. I do correct them by saying my name is actually Luke whenever someone does it though, which usually embarrasses them into not doing it again.
7. Has being Blind effected your Mental Health?
I wouldn’t say that it’s effected my Mental Health. Yes I get annoyed every so often whenever being Blind prevents me from doing something that I really want to do, but I think everyone gets a little down from time to time and it’s all about picking yourself up and moving on.
8. Have you experienced discrimination?
Unfortunately yes, one of the times that really sticks in my Mind is when I got uninvited from a Press Event that I was really looking forward to attending. It was the launch event of a really cool Ice Bar in Leeds, and even though I had asked them what accessibility accommodations they had in place, including them telling me that they had Reserved Seating and Table Service, 24 hours before the event was due to start they emailed to say that they had overbooked and there was no longer a space available for me. Strangely they were still inviting people through Social Media after telling me that there wasn’t any more spaces though. Luckily Karma got them in the end as they unfortunately had to close down after only being open for about six months.
9. If you could regain your Sight with a cure, would you want to?
No, I don’t think I would. I’ve come to accept my Blindness as being a part of me, so I would have to think really long and hard about whether or not I would want to get rid of it.
I also tag…
I’m now supposed to tag some other people to also answer the questions too, but instead of tagging individual people, i’m just going to tag anyone who wants to answer them. If you do decide to do the Do All Blind People Think The Same? Tag though, please leave me the link to your Post or Video down below so that I can check it out.
What’s some of your answers to the Do All Blind People Think The Same? Tag? Have you any stories about how you’ve been discriminated against? How accessible or inaccessible is the City that you live in? Please let me know down below.
